In New Jersey, tenants are legally protected in many ways, but rental qualification requirements are not legally standardized — they vary by landlord. A good credit score and adequate income documentation are essential. Generally, a minimum credit score of 680 is required; 720+ is preferred. Some landlords also review the full credit report history. The average income ratio required is 3:1.
